Safe Beauty Swaps
It’s been a year since I started learning about clean beauty. Like most, I had no idea that our personal care products were going unregulated by the FDA as the most recent federal law was passed in 1938.
I was overwhelmed. I had been buying drugstore skincare, makeup, sunscreen, and hair care for my entire life. How was it possible that 1,500+ harmful ingredients were lurking around, waiting to attack my body through allergens, hormone disruptors, and cancer triggers.
Where was I to start? I had so much to learn.
I began with the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit activist group that strives for a healthier environment. Their Skin Deep database and app allows you to look up products and view their ratings based on the safety of ingredients. That is what I did, researching better alternatives to the ones harmful to my health.
To save you some time on your better beauty journey, I have used the EWG website to provide safe swaps to commonly used cosmetic products. Many conventional brands have similar ingredients and concerns as the ones listed below, but you can look up your products through EWG as well!
