Everything you need to dip your feet into the world of veganism wrapped into one interview. Shelby Kiser, a holistic health Instagram influencer, shares her journey as a vegan. Her love for educating is an inspiration for anyone looking to share their passion.
Where are you from: Michigan
What did eating growing up look like to you: Broccoli, chicken, rice, mashed potatoes. Standard American diet. Eggs in the morning, cereal. I never really liked the taste of meat, but I knew nothing about veganism.
Tell me amount your decision to go vegan: Two years ago, I had a friend who was vegan. It really opened my eyes. I had some health problems, I wanted to help myself. I was going to the doctor, medicine wasn’t helping so this was an alternative route. Once I realized how good it made me feel along with the ethical and environmental reasons, everything was all wrapped up and ready to go!
Three favorite foods: Pasta, fruit, potatoes. Carbs.
It’s not uncommon to see dispute between those who avoid animal products and those who do not. How do you remain grounded and respectful in these situations: I know where I was at. I understand, I’ve been there. I do struggle with it though, it’s hard for me to know people love animals but still consume their products. You have to love people where they’re at and educate them- it will fall into place.
One woman you look up to and why: Organic Olivia- she is a holistic health Instagrammer. I just really admire her, she is so educated not only about veganism but also herbalism! I like to be educated, I want to be able to support what I am preaching.
Do you chose to prepare a lot of your meals at home? What does this mean to you: I juice almost every morning which means I prep a lot of fruits and vegetables. Juicing is what I first started with- when you juice you are getting all of the nutrients, all of the enzymes right away. There is no point in juicing if you are not using organic produce because it’s like drinking a glass of pesticides it’s so heavily concentrated.
For someone considering veganism, what’s the first step: Education! Education! Educate 100%. You need to have a why. Why are you vegan? Health? You need to know what goes on with the animal industry. How do you approach getting all of your nutrients in: Eat a wide variety of well-rounded foods. Nuts, seeds, chickpeas, fruits and vegetables. Make sure you are eating more from the earth than from a box.
You have a passion and a voice, how are you going to use them: I try really hard to educate though social media. I feel so passionate about it, I have seen how veganism has turned my health around 100%. I know I am not the only one, if going vegan helped me, it can help other people too.
For anyone reading, vegan or not, what is one thing they can do today to benefit their health and well-being: Eat more from the earth. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Listen to your body!
